CLOSE Landscape Architecture+ was part of a planning team led by Urban Strategies, an internationally renowned and awarding winning urban design firm from Toronto. Completed in 1996, the Master Plan provides a framework to guide and implement development on both campuses into the 21st Century. The multi-layered and complex plan seeks to make both campuses more livable within their urban context and acknowledges the importance of the Mississippi River in the design for the Minneapolis Campus. CLOSE was responsible for the Open Space Guidelines and public realm improvements. The University has implemented numerous recommendations forwarded in the plan, including reconnecting the campus to the Mississippi River and developing a Gateway Center at one entry to campus.
