Mississippi River Gorge

Located in south Minneapolis, the Gorge is a unique portion of the Mississippi River, well-loved by many locals. CLOSE Landscape Architecture+ coordinated an intensive public participation process with Longfellow Neighborhood residents and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to develop a framework for long-range decision making and construction improvements.

The concept plan focused on finding an appropriate balance between recreation and preservation. Since future investment will be limited, sustainability is woven into every aspect of the plan. It identifies a four part strategy to eliminate erosion and preserve and restore fragile ecosystems stressed by increasing and inappropriate use. The plan calls for educating the public while limiting and improving access to ensure the long term viability of this natural treasure.
