Medtronic: Cardiac Rhythm Disease Management Mounds View, MN
The Medtronic building design and site plan are conceived as an integrated whole reflecting the way Medtronic products link the natural world and technology. The building and its immediate surrounding site are developed with a vocabulary based on linear, architectonic geometry surrounded by the organic, natural site areas.
The building masses are integrated into the landscape with a landscape plinth. This provides a classical base for the building and extends the geometry and scale of the building out into the site. Particular care was used in integrating many existing site features into the building design and site plan. The site design worked around a grove of mature Scarlet Oaks, major wetland areas and trees and several ponds. The building design orients many of the interior spaces to these remaining features. Nearly 100 valuable landscape trees have been salvaged for re-use.
The landscape plan is developed as a series of linear zones that correspond to the major building pieces and alternate themes between upland and wetland. Plant materials in each zone were selected and organized to reinforce all of the major exterior site program elements found within the overall visual framework. These include the street promenade and main visitor entry, the dining terrace, reflecting pools and child care play yard.
